Newman University and the Kansas Association of Community Colleges launch a statewide pathway letting eligible graduates and public-safety professionals finish a criminal justice bachelor's degree in 12 months with a $20,000 scholarship.
-- Newman University and the Kansas Association of Community Colleges have established a Kansas-specific pathway allowing eligible member-college graduates and working public-safety professionals to complete Newman's Bachelor of Science in criminal justice in as few as 12 months. Every student admitted to the pathway as a graduate of a member college receives a $20,000 Newman scholarship.

The pathway responds to a common gap among Kansans who hold relevant training but no bachelor's degree. Community college graduates often stop short of completing a degree rather than start over elsewhere, while working public-safety professionals frequently carry academy training, military service, or certifications that have never translated into academic credit. Newman built the pathway with people already employed full time in mind as they pursue further education.
The pathway covers graduates of the association's 19 community colleges and three technical colleges across Kansas, giving the agreement a statewide reach. Courses on the Kansas Board of Regents' guaranteed transfer list are assured to move over to Newman under the systemwide transfer framework.
Newman's Bachelor of Science in criminal justice requires 120 credit hours, and the pathway lays out how those hours can be assembled quickly. A graduate with an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree can transfer up to 60 credits earned through that degree, and Newman awards up to 30 additional credits for qualifying prior learning. That leaves roughly 30 credits to complete at Newman, which a full-time student can finish across two back-to-back semesters plus a summer or intervening term. Consistent with state guidelines, prior-learning credit must reflect genuine college-level knowledge and cannot duplicate credit a student has already earned elsewhere.
Qualifying prior learning may include basic training completed through the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, military training, professional certifications, employer training, and credit-by-exam programs. Graduates holding an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree receive assured admission to Newman with junior standing under the agreement, while graduates of an Associate of Applied Science program are considered for admission after a degree audit confirms their general education requirements have been met.
Funding is built into the pathway alongside the credit recognition. Every student admitted as a graduate of a member college receives the $20,000 Newman scholarship, and Newman matches dollar for dollar any federal Pell Grant or state of Kansas aid the student applies to the program. Together, the credit pathway and funding are designed to let working Kansans finish a bachelor's degree without leaving their jobs or communities behind, a combination with significance for the state's criminal justice workforce.
