Leading virtual health care company's new study adds to the evidence that targeting the brain and nervous system can help reduce the intensity of chronic back pain
DENVER, CO, October 30, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Neurologist Dr. Eric Anderson is highlighting the role the brain and nervous system play in chronic back pain, as new research from Lin Health adds to the evidence that treatments targeting how the nervous system processes pain can help patients find relief.
"Chronic back pain can be incredibly disruptive," says Anderson, Chief Medical Officer of Lin Health, the virtual health care company with a 4.9 rating on Trustpilot. "And sometimes pain continues after an injury has healed or the original problem has been addressed. This can happen when the nervous system has become increasingly sensitive to external signals, and its response is to essentially turn up the volume on pain."
Known as central sensitization, this process can help explain why some people continue to experience pain despite surgery, injections, medication, or other conventional treatments. In one study of people with chronic back and neck pain, researchers identified central sensitization as the primary driver of pain in 88.3% of cases.
Anderson says behavioral therapies can help reduce the nervous system's heightened sensitivity and change how the brain responds to signals, and subsequently the pain experience that is generated by the brain. Rather than focusing solely on the area that hurts, these approaches help patients better understand their symptoms and develop new ways to respond to pain. Lin Health's virtual pain recovery program incorporates these strategies through one-on-one coaching, ongoing messaging, and self-guided digital modules and exercises.
Research (ASPN Abstract | Full Study Poster) presented by Lin Health at the 2026 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Pain & Neuroscience examined outcomes among 1,620 people enrolled in the company's program, including 613 whose primary complaint was back pain. Among participants with back pain who completed follow-up assessments, average pain intensity declined within the first month and had fallen by more than one point on a 10-point scale by the third month. Participants with other types of musculoskeletal pain also reported improvements.
For people whose back pain persists despite conventional treatment, the source of the problem may not be limited to the back itself. Understanding how the brain and nervous system contribute to the chronic pain experience could open the door to new ways of finding relief.
About Dr. Eric Anderson:
Dr. Eric Anderson is Chief Medical Officer of Lin Health and a nationally recognized leader in telemedicine, mobile health, and innovative care delivery models. A neurologist by training, he has spent his career developing physician-led, tech-enabled care systems designed to improve outcomes, expand access, and reduce friction in health care delivery. He was among the first to demonstrate that remote stroke assessment could be performed using a smartphone, helping establish the foundation for modern tele-neurology. He has since built and scaled multi-state virtual care platforms delivering multidisciplinary care for complex conditions. At Lin Health, Dr. Anderson is focused on advancing whole-person care models that address the biological, behavioral, and social drivers of chronic pain — moving beyond symptom management toward measurable recovery. About Lin Health:
Lin Health is a physician-led virtual care platform focused on treating chronic pain and persistent symptoms through a whole-person, evidence-based approach. Founded in 2021, Lin Health partners with leading health systems such as Mayo Clinic to deliver multidisciplinary care that addresses the biological, behavioral, and social drivers of chronic conditions. The Lin Health model integrates physician evaluation and clinical oversight, structured behavioral pain recovery, personalized coaching and care plans, and continuous patient engagement. This approach aligns with clinical guidelines but is rarely implemented effectively in traditional systems due to access limitations, clinician shortages, and fragmented care pathways. Targeting the nervous system is highly effective, but this intervention is inaccessible to most patients and clinicians because it's very high-touch and not yet included in standard medical training. Lin Health bridges that gap, delivering scalable, affordable care that is broadly covered by insurance and designed to produce measurable outcomes. Learn more at Lin.Health.
