Creatrix Solutions released a new guide examining research on exercise in heated environments, infrared sauna recovery, stretching, mobility, and heat acclimation, with practical guidance for using an exercise sauna safely.

-- Creatrix Solutions has published a new guide examining the science behind working out in an infrared sauna, including research on exercise in heated environments, heat acclimation, stretching, mobility work, and post-exercise infrared sauna recovery.
More information is available at https://creatrixsolutions.com/products/exercise-sauna.
The guide distinguishes between research conducted directly with infrared saunas and the broader body of exercise science involving physical activity performed in heated environments.
Rather than treating sauna exercise as high-intensity training performed in a hotter room, the guide focuses on controlled activities such as walking, mobility drills, gentle stretching, yoga-style movement, and light bodyweight exercise.
Research on exercise in heat provides part of the scientific basis for this approach. A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology followed trained cyclists through 10 days of exercise in approximately 104°F heat. The heat-acclimation protocol was associated with improvements in VO2 max, lactate threshold, and time-trial performance.
The research was conducted in a controlled heated environment rather than an infrared sauna, an important distinction when interpreting the findings.
Research also suggests that adding heat to stretching may influence flexibility. A systematic review published in Physical Therapy in Sport evaluated 12 controlled studies involving 352 participants and found that adding heat to stretching produced greater improvements in joint range of motion than stretching alone. The studies used therapeutic heating methods rather than infrared saunas.
Infrared sauna research provides another relevant area of evidence. In a 2023 study involving male basketball players, athletes completed a demanding resistance and plyometric workout and then recovered either at room temperature or inside an infrared sauna. The infrared sauna condition was associated with less perceived muscle soreness, better perceived recovery, and better preservation of countermovement-jump performance the following day.
The athletes rested in the sauna rather than exercising inside it, making the study most relevant to recovery rather than simultaneous sauna exercise.
A separate randomized controlled trial involving adults with cardiovascular risk factors compared exercise alone with exercise followed by sauna exposure over eight weeks. Adding sauna after exercise was associated with greater improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness and reductions in systolic blood pressure and total cholesterol compared with exercise alone.
Creatrix Solutions notes that heat itself creates additional physiological stress, which is why low-to-moderate intensity activities may be better suited to heated exercise environments than heavy lifting or high-intensity interval training.
The Sauna Fix Exercise Sauna is designed with enough interior space for standing, stretching, kneeling, walking in place, and changing body position during a session.
